International competition winners for archaeological shelters
NEWS
Following a prestigious international competition, Hugh Broughton Architects have been announced as the architects for prototype shelters to protect Roman mosaics at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nea Paphos in Cyprus.
Our competition winning proposals for Nea Paphos were developed for the Getty Conservation Institute and Department of Antiquities of the Government of Cyprus.
Three-dimensional timber structures are supported on concrete pads and sand beds which require no excavation. The structure is designed to resist earthquakes. The insulated roof and building geometry promote natural ventilation to control humidity and reduce temperature to protect the archaeology. The form of the buildings was also developed to minimise impact on this magical historic site.
