Planning Consent for Kew Gardens Pump House
Our design for a timber enclosure for new irrigation pumps to serve Royal Botanic Gardens Kew has been granted planning consent and is now under construction.
Following careful studies of the natural environment at Kew Gardens, a design was created using interlocking timber struts that mimics the appearance of a fallen leaf. Timber was selected for use on the external structure so that it sits comfortably within the surrounding flora, and it will age gracefully over time. It follows a grand tradition of innovative engineering projects at Kew that have been a source of decorative architecture within gardens. The pump house will be constructed by CityAxis and timber specialists, Xylotek.
The project is part of a much wider Irrigation Masterplan, developed by Hugh Broughton Architects and Stantec, to implement more efficient, effective, and alternative sustainable water strategies across the World Heritage Site’s landscape to help realise RBG Kew’s commitment of being Climate Positive by 2030.
